ITOA Responsible Tourism Policy
Mission Statement
Tourism that takes full account of its current and future environmental, social and economic impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and communities in equal measure.
At ITOA, responsible tourism isn’t just an aspiration — it’s action. Our members are committed to delivering high-quality visitor experiences that also support local communities, protect the environment, and respect Ireland’s culture and heritage.
Through training, certification and partnership, we’re working to ensure that inbound tourism plays a positive role in Ireland’s sustainable future.
Our Approach
ITOA members are taking practical steps under three core pillars:

Protecting the Environment
Reducing impact, encouraging low-carbon choices, and supporting sustainable travel.

Supporting Local Communities
Ensuring economic benefit flows to local suppliers, particularly in rural and regional Ireland.

Respecting Culture & Heritage
Promoting responsible visitor behaviour and experiences that preserve Ireland’s unique story.
Progress in 2025
This year, ITOA members have made real progress:
- 18 members completed the Sustainable Tourism Training Programme with the Sustainable Tourism Network (STN)
- 13 members received prestigious STN Awards
- 4 members have achieved Gold Level Certification to date – Brendan Vacations, Abbey (Ireland & UK), Vagabond Tours & Moloney Kelly DMC. Brendan Vacations pictured across was the first Irish-based tour operator to do so
- 4 members are currently undergoing full certification audit
- Other members are progressing through additional responsible and sustainable journey programmes
Looking Ahead
Responsible tourism is a journey, not a destination. ITOA will continue to:
- Champion responsible practices across the inbound sector
- Support members on their sustainability pathways
- Collaborate with partners, agencies and suppliers who share our values
We believe Ireland’s long-term tourism success depends on doing the right thing — for visitors, for businesses, and for the places we all care about.

In 2018 the ITOA began the vital steps of formulating a clear responsible tourism policy which will be deliverable by ITOA members in the workplace and marketplace. A permanent committee of members was formed and in conjunction with Ecotourism Ireland, Ireland’s leading responsible tourism training and certification company, a code of criteria and principles for ITOA member companies to adhere to was drawn up. In addition the ITOA has also committed to provide support and training to members on an ongoing basis to implement positive change and monitor the results.
